New weapon in the fight against sheep parasites -

THE launch of a new anthemintic group will help in the fight against resistance to drenches

Given increasing resistance to existing sheep wormers, the launch of a new anthelmintic group has come as some relief – but also brings with it a great deal of responsibility for farmers to use it appropriately.

Novartis Animal Health’s new Zolvix is an amino-acetonitrile derivative (4-AD or orange wormer) so offers a fourth option in addition to benzimidazoles (1-BZ/white), levamisoles (2-LM/ yellow) and macrocyclic lactones (3-ML/clear).

Lesley Stubbings, independent sheep consultant and instigator of the Sustainable Control Of Parasites in Sheep scheme (SCOPS), said at the launch, the fact this was the first new active in 25 years was ‘very exciting’ and gave producers a unique opportunity to slow down resistance to the other wormer groups.
