Livestock farmers must be careful when spraying

WITH a ban on several herbicides and pesticides threatened, livestock farmers need to take their lead from the arable sector and prove they too can use chemicals responsibly.

A new report on weed control in grass and forage crops, published by Adas and commissioned by Eblex and DairyCo, confirms EU legislation and the Water Framework Directive mean the range of products currently available in under threat.

While arable farmers are well aware of the implications, there is concern the livestock sector is lagging behind and, therefore, increasing the risk.

“The contamination of water with agrochemicals, and in particular herbicides, means unless these sprays are used more responsibly they will be withdrawn from use,” the report summary reads.
