Members of the Clitheroe and Bowland branch of the NFU met at the Copy Nook Hotel in Bolton-by-Bowland on Tuesday to discuss the issue with Gareth Jones, of the British Wool Marketing Board, BWMB.
Mr Jones told wool producers that demand for wool at their auctions was strong and this had led to a dramatic increase in price and a better deal for farmers.
He said: “At the end of last year the price indicator was around 75p per kilo for wool but due to a limited supply the indicator in recent weeks has reached 113p per kilo.
Prince Charles is also calling for those in the textile, fashion and the carpet trade to increase demand for wool and help raise its value.
Mr Jones said: “In order for us to continue this work, as well as control our costs, it is vital we get the support of all producers and every kilo of wool is crucial, in order to have as much wool as possible to sell through the auction system. This will benefit all producers”
The NFU branch was also told wool was starting to be recognised for being natural, long lasting and bio-degradable and therefore was a great green commodity.
Andrew Rothwell, NFU Clitheroe group secretary, said he was pleased Mr Jones attended the meeting and gave farmers an update on the wool sector.
He said: “I’m sure farmers will welcome a revival in the wool sector and the BWMB’s commitment to promote it. I’d urge all members to support what they are trying to achieve. We would also like to see retailers and manufacturers get on board and push what is an excellent, environmentally friendly product.”
