December Update: Cumbria Farmer Groups and Monitor Farms

THE following information is an update on the livestock programme farmer group work and monitor farms organised by Cumbria Farmer Network

Ravenstonedale with Sally Dixon

Sally has been working with this group to source support from the Livestock Programme to fund speakers this winter on grassland management, minerals in silage and improving breeding performance.

Broughton in Furness with Dorothy Wilkinson

This group has had one open meeting with local vet Bill McKinney to discuss the benefits of animal health planning.  Other meetings planned on lamb selection, renewable energy and IT training – may include a study trip.

Croglin with Kate Gascoyne

After the meeting in summer, the group postponed the return visit to examine the results of a direct seeding trial because of the weather and plan to have the same event in spring.  They are also planning a meeting on nutrition in January.

Beef & Sheep Monitor Farm Group with Sally Dixon

25 farmers attended a meeting to discuss the health and welfare of the suckler cow, with Victor Oudhuis from Paragon Vets attending.  The next meeting will focus on reviewing the results of various technical and financial reviews of Ken Pears' monitor farm and discussing future plans that will then be put in place and monitored.

Dairy Monitor Farm Group with Robert Burrow

Invites sent out to invite anyone interested to attend a meeting on Thursday 17th December.  The business group meeting will focus on the animal health plan recently carried out on Matt Bland’s farm, with a discussion on improving fertility with John Cook from Genus.

If any farmers would like support for meetings in their area on similar topics, or would like to attend the dairy monitor farm meeting, then please contact the Cumbria Farmer Network office Tel: 01768 868 615
