ARABLE farmers in Cumbria will be asked to help with the Campaign for the Farmed Environment at a meeting being held at The Stoneybeck Inn at Penrith on Friday, February 12th followed by a farm walk on Brackenburgh Estate.
The leading farming organisations are now working together (under the umbrella of the Campaign for the Farmed Environment) to encourage farmers and land managers to voluntarily adopt important land management practices that will benefit the environment.
Adam Bedford, NFU North West’s arable adviser, said: “The Campaign for the Farmed Environment is a voluntary approach which keeps mandatory set aside, policed through cross compliance inspections on farm, at bay. It’s clear that voluntary measures, where farmers can get involved in a way which suits their farming system, are a much better way to grab hold of those environmental benefits that used to be provided by set aside.
“Any farmers who want to know what they should do to help with the Campaign for the Farmed Environment should attend this meeting. They’ll also hear an update over lunch on all arable issues from NFU’s chief arable adviser Guy Gagen and a view on all things agronomic from Simon Nelson of Agrovista.”
The meeting will begin at 11-45am prompt for lunch on arrival. The lunch will be followed by a farm walk at the Brackenburgh estate’s Aik Bank Farm where the issues raised over lunch will be witnessed at a practical level.
Farmers who would like more details or want to book a place, should call NFU North West Policy Adviser, Adam Bedford, on 01695 554900 or email adam.bedford@nfu.org.uk.
